Arizona Diary: Steve Case (AZ Coordinator)

You did it Arizona! From the early morning arrival of "The Flag" at the NM state line on 11/6 until the "hand off" in the middle of the Colorado River Bridge at Parker at noon of 11/10, Arizona excelled. It all started with AA/FO Ken White and the support team that assembled with him a few weeks before the arrival . (With the constant backing of the unbelievable National Team.)

There are so many folks along the way that helped "make it an incredible event." We reached out to schools, media, state and local officials, law enforcement, fire departments, Rotary Clubs across the state, the Lions Club of Globe, small and large business and just plain folks... and they responded. I would love to mention everyone who aided us personally but that would take a book.

Perhaps, most of all, I would like to thank the people who came to watch, cheer, wave and in many cases, cry. To many, this event became a way to heal. The incredible citizens of Springerville, Show Low, Globe, Superior, and Parker. The group of Rotarians that assembled to 5:30AM on the Mill Ave. Bridge in Tempe. The solitary gentleman who stood alone in the dark very, very early on the morning of the 9th, in Hope. (What an appropriate name.) The group of students from The Scholars' Academy from Ehernberg, and their teacher Julie Anderson, who traveled by bus to help finish the run (with many others) on the last 13 mile leg to the Colorado River. The Parker Chamber of Commerce and their "free hot dogs and apple pie" and such a great farewell from our state.

Finally... on a very personal note. My wife, Nancie, and I had reservations at the Marriott World Trade Center for the evening of September 10th. We planned to be at the opening of the New York Stock Exchange on the morning of the 11th, a few short blocks from the World Trade Center. Circumstances caused us to change our plans late Monday afternoon. Like many of you, we had friends that did not come home from work on September 11th. We know how blessed we are and the "Flag Across America" run has allowed me to heal... and to find what completion is possible. Thanks to every one of you who participated in this historic event.

God Bless each and every one...
And God Bless America
