Let me say first that I was not a runner in the event, but I can proudly say that my 19-year-old son was running for the victims and for me on the 3.9 mile trek to the state's capitol building in Raleigh.
I was never more proud to see my son carrying the flag of this great nation and for the victims of 911. I am very patriotic from birth, my father was in WW II as a Marine and I served in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict. But never was I more impressed when the team came down the highway with cars slowing down to encourage and thank those carrying out this mission. One car pulled over and someone who looked like a veteran jumped out and started running along side of the group. People from the local businesses were coming out to cheer the groups. For a 50 year old man, it was hard to hold the tears to see people finally supporting America and it's flag. The flag is not only a symbol of our country, but it is the ultimate symbol of it's people.
My son will never forget the memories and what he was to personally accomplish from carrying the flag. His best high school friend is in the U.S. Army , 82nd Airborne, Fort Bragg, N.C. getting ready to go to Afghanistan. John was carrying the flag for his friend also.
What a great mission all of you who organized and supported have accomplished. God bless you, and God bless America.
Thank you,
I am an American!
