Oklahoma Diary: Sandy Dunn

I was planning to go to the Oklahoma City Memorial where the runners were going to stop for twenty minutes on Oct. 29, 2001. As luck would have it, a repairman was due at my house at the same time. However, I went to the flag run website to see their route and was able to catch them later on that night. As I drove east on Hwy. 152 towards Mustang, OK, I saw some Army men waiting to take the flag and run. I stopped and talked with them for a few minutes and requested that they take a pin from me to pass on to the people who were going the entire route with the flag. I had purchased the pin locally and it said, "American Spirit Will Not Be Broken" with "LET'S ROLL" in the middle of the pin in honor of Todd Beamer and the freedom fighters of Flight 93. The men graciously agreed to do this task for me. I drove on until I saw the flashing police lights and then I pulled of on a side road and waited for the procession. As the runners came by, I opened my car window and waved my flag proudly and turned up my stereo with Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an AMERICAN". Then I fell in line behind the many cars that were following the runners listening to Lee Greenwood over again with tears in my eyes. As they were on a country highway with not many homes between Mustang, OK, and Union City, OK, I was afraid that there would not be many people at the intersections along this part of their run. So, I pulled off and went ahead to another intersection in front of them to wait and wave my flag and cheer them on. Amazingly, even in this rural part, there were cars parked at just about every intersection waiting and waving flags! There was a car following the runners that had young people with their heads out the windows singing "She's a Grand Old Flag" as loud as they could. I'm sure this run has helped people all across this country now feel a personal link with all those that died on the flights on Sept. 11 and with all those who have suffered and lost so much. Words cannot express what an emotional experience this was for me and how happy and proud I felt to be a part of it. Todd Beamer should be proud that AMERICANS are doing exactly what he said in his favorite phrase and final words: We're rolling on to show terrorists that we will not cower and our spirit will not be broken! GOD BLESS AMERICA and thank you for letting me and other Americans take part in showing our support and our pride in AMERICA!
