OKLAHOMA CITY, October 29, 2001 -
Runners carrying an American flag from Boston to
Los Angeles have moved into Oklahoma from
Texas.
The relay is to symbolically complete the
flights of hijacked airliners used in the
September 11 terrorist attacks on America.
The run began October 11 at Boston's Logan
Airport where two of the four hijacked airliners
had departed. It's scheduled to end on November 11
at Los Angeles International Airport where three
of the hijacked airliners were to land.
The runners will be carrying and relaying the
flag across Oklahoma today.
``When the group broke into 'God Bless
America,' when cars passed by and honked, your
heart goes through your throat,'' Yvonne Savattere
said.
The Rowlett, Texas legal assistant was one of a
constantly changing contingent of volunteer
runners who helped carry the flag through the
Dallas area Saturday as part of the Americans
United Flag Across America campaign.
The nationwide run was organized by airline
employees, but most of the Dallas runners were
people like Savattere, who had no connection to
the tragedy other than a desire to show
loyalty.
In Marshall, Texas, factories shut down Friday
afternoon and schoolchildren lined the streets,
she said. In Gladewater, the runners went through
the football field during a break in the Friday
night game.
In part, the purpose of the flag run is to
honor those who died in the attacks, but it is
also to give fellow citizens a chance to
demonstrate their spirit and patriotism,
organizers said.
On Sunday, the flag was carried north to Denton
and Gainesville and then across the border into
Oklahoma.
