National Flag Run Stops at
Meredith College
School children, local residents and the mayor of
Raleigh joined Meredith College students, faculty and staff
for the Americans United Flag Run’s stop on campus on October
17. An estimated crowd of 400 people attended the
event.
The Flag Run was organized as a tribute to the
passengers and crew members aboard the planes that crashed on
Sept. 11. The flag left Boston on October 11, the one month
anniversary of the attack, and it has been carried around the
clock with the goal of arriving in Los Angeles on Veteran’s
Day, Nov. 11.
Members of the U.S. Marine Corps marched
the flag onto campus through the Faircloth service gate. A
parachute jump by the Fort Bragg-based Army Golden Knights
followed, with the parachute team carrying United States flags
as they jumped.
According to Todd Wissing, an American
Airlines pilot and media director for the Flag Run, the
project was organized because "this country needs something to
look forward to, and it is a great way to get America on the
road to recovery."
After leaving the Meredith campus, the
Flag Run team made its way to Cary, N.C. before continuing on
their cross-country journey to Los Angeles.
