October 18, 2001 - Avid runners, average
runners and any other American runners took turns
running with the flag in Kershaw County Thursday.
Ability wasn't as important as participation in a
worthy cause.
The Flag Across America event is designed for
anyone who wants to carry the American flag in
this month long, coast to coast demonstration. The
event is a show of support and a fundraiser for
those affected by the September 11th attacks.
Runner Clyde Kings says, "What little I can do,
this is a good way to show that I do love America,
and it is my home."
Some running, like Dale Walters, had
connections to the disaster, "My niece's
grandmother actually was on the second plane that
hit Trade Tower two."
Others, like Lansing Brewer of Camden, took
their athletic abilities and helped organize this
portion of the national run, "It's not just me,
it's a lot of people, especially runners who have
been wanting to do something to show our support."
As the runners approached Cassatt, they saw how
a little town can have a lot of spirit. Residents
held flags high, played music and applauded the
runners' efforts.
Some South Carolina Highway Patrolmen joined in
the run early Thursday morning at the North and
South Carolina border. Sellmore Luckie, of the
Patrol, explained, "It's not only a good thing,
it's the proper thing."
For any South Carolinian or American running,
whether for the entire day, an hour or even just a
moment, the run could be the most significant run
of his or her life. Runners are scheduled
to arrive at the South Caroilna State House
at 11pm Thursday.
