Press Release - October 11, 2001 12:00
Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift kicks off first leg of cross-country U.S. Flag relay.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 11:45 AM today at the Hilton Hotel at Logan Airport. Mass. Governor Jane Swift will hand the flag to the first runner who will then, under Mass. State police escort, carry the flag on the first leg of its cross country journey. The route will be from Logan Airport, down U.S. Route 1 to Augusta, Georgia, then west to Los Angeles International Airport. We want to complete the flight from BOS to LAX, that AA FLT 11 & UA Flt 175 were unable to finish. Our route will touch each state that was directly affected by the tragedy.
Thousands of runners will carry the flag, in relay style, around the clock to finish at LAX on NOV. 11: Veterans Day. This National event is a symbolic effort of support & unity to honor our fallen comrades, to show support for our troops fighting the new war on terrorism, and to support the victims families by highlighting the charities available.
Progress can be monitored on our website: www.flagrun2001.org. Also, details for making financial contributions to the charities are on the user friendly website: www.flagrun2001.org.
This effort, initiated by airline employees and military personnel, is a national event. All Americans are encouraged to participate in the run, support help, or financial contributions. Go to the website wwww.flagrun2001.org to participate. Thanks in advance for your generous support.
