FLAG RUN

Groton, CT (October 12, 2001) Flag relay kicks off in Boston, seeks to honor those lost in September attacks, support patriotism and raise money for families of persons killed by taking US flag on foot from Boston to Los Angeles. Ground Zero on Saturday, October 13th at 10:30 a.m.; NJ: 11:00 a.m.; PA: 10:00 p.m.

The AAmericans United Flag Across America, which began with Governor Jane Swift of Massachusetts presenting a US flag to a team in Boston, began its trek across the nation yesterday with a ceremony at the Hilton-Logan Airport.

The team ran the flag through the city of Boston, then down US Route 1, crossing the Rhode Island border at 8:30 p.m., and then continued on through cheering midnight crowds south of Providence, RI. It was met today by elementary school students, and many others as it made its way through Connecticut.

The organization, composed of airline employees for American and United Airlines, together with members of the US military, police, EMS and firefighters is determined to physically run a United States flag across the country. They will run from Boston-the departure city of AA Flt. 11 and UA Flt. 175, on to Los Angeles-the arrival city for the aircraft, two of four that were hijacked in the September 11 attacks.

After crossing through Connecticut and into New York at 05:00 a.m. EST, the flag, escorted by a large contingent of police and firefighters, will make its way down US Route 1, to Broadway. After a diversion to visit the Fireman's Memorial on Riverside Drive, the flag will continue to City Hall, then to Ground Zero. Firefighters, police, airline crew members and US military representatives will lead a moment of prayer for those killed in the tragedy before continuing through the Holland Tunnel and south through New Jersey and entering Pennsylvania by 10 p.m. on October 13.

People desiring to participate in the run should go to the web site: http://www.flagrun2001.org and sign up to run or help in the logistics. Runners are needed for Pennsylvania and Maryland. If you cannot do either, please cheer us on and visit the donations page of our website and make a contribution to a fund benefiting the families of those killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
