Dallas, TX (October 27, 2001, 2:58 pm Eastern Time) Flag Relay Continues West On Way to Dallas on 10/27 and Oklahoma City on 10/29 Seeks to Honor Those Lost in September Attacks, Support Troops Overseas and Raise $1 Million for Families of Persons Killed
The AAmericans United Flag Across America, which began With Mass. Governor Jane Swift presenting a U.S. flag to a team in Boston, is heading through streets lined with thousands of well-wishers in east Texas, from veterans to schoolchildren, toward a warm welcome in Dallas/Ft. Worth.
Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk has proclaimed today as "Americans United Flag Across America Day." The group began the run in Boston-the departure city of AA Flt. 11 and UA Flt. 175, headed to Los Angeles-the arrival city of three of four planes that were hijacked in the Sept. 11 attacks. The flag, which has visited Ground Zero in Manhattan and touched all states hit by the Sept. 11 attacks, plans to continue on and reach Dallas at 5:44 p.m. today. It will then move to a rally at the American Airlines Center at 8:09 p.m., through Texas Stadium (carried by former Dallas Cowboy and U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, Chad Hennings) at 9:30 p.m. and finally to a Texas-sized celebration at Founder's Plaza at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at 1 a.m., Oct. 28 that will feature two brightly-lit aircraft (American and United) and fire trucks with hoses spraying water high into the air.
The organization, composed of a grassroots team of airline employees, military personnel and now many other volunteers, recently announced that they intend to raise $1,000,000 for funds benefiting the families of the victims of the tragedies on Sept. 11.
"We are stunned by the numbers of people that took part in this historic event of goodwill and unity in the great states of Miss., La., and now Texas," said National Director First Officer Mike Burr. "We encourage runners to gather pledges, visit our Web site and keep the grassroots spirit going by making a donation as well. If we all donate a little, it turns into a lot very quickly. In this way we can help the children who will benefit from the funds we have listed."
Tomorrow the flag will be in Norman, Okla., at the University of Oklahoma for a 20-minute ceremony with David Boren, OU president. Mr. Boren is a current member of the AMR Corp., parent company of American Airlines, and a former Oklahoma governor and U.S. senator. Also attending the event will be Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) who will run the flag from the university through the streets of Norman on its way to Oklahoma City where it will participate in a memorial service at the Alfred P. Murrah Memorial site.
