SC Update for 10/14/2001
Things are going great!!
This flag run is gaining momentum at an astonishing rate. I have a few
notes for this weekend.
- Please register on the www.flagrun2001.org web page. I know it was not
accepting new runners for a while, but it is back up now. It’s important
that you register.
- In addition to runners, I need people who are willing to drive and
transport some runners back and forth between their pick-up points. I
expect to have some vans (U-haul has signed up/still waiting for Ford or
Chevy), I need the drivers. Please let me know which of the 4 areas you
would be willing to help. Also, we need drivers for the motor home,
especially at night. The plan is to have the original drivers from Boston
go ahead of the caravan at night and get a couple of hours sleep in a
hotel.
- I am still planning having a core of “primary” runners. That way, no
matter what time of day we can keep the flag moving. I highly encourage
EVERYONE to run. If we get a thousand runners, EVERYONE will get a chance
to run with the flag.
- Advertising. I am working on it. Tell your friends. Call the
TV/Radio/News Papers. A lot of schools are sending their entire track
teams. We plan on special celebrations in Camden and Columbia.
- Contributions. 100 % go to the victim’s families. There are many ways
to contribute. Check the web site.
- Timeline: entire route along Hwy 1
NC border 0800 Thursday, 18 OCT
Camden 1700 Thursday, 18 OCT
Columbia Capitol 2300 Thursday, 18 OCT
Aiken 0930 Friday, 19 OCT
GA border 1200 Friday, 19 OCT
These times are estimates. I will have a more specific timeline posted on
the web in a couple of days. I encourage anyone who wants to run to be
along HWY 1 when the flag passes. The timing is based on a 10 min/mile
pace.
- We have Hwy Patrol escort the entire way along Hwy 1.
- Check out the other state pages on the web site. There are some pretty
cool pictures for you to see.
Things are coming together pretty fast. Please spread the word. I am
sending this e-mail a couple of different ways. It will be posted on the
web page in the future.
Thank you,
Rich Guilford
