Texas Diary: Judy VanDermeer

What a day it was October 29th!!

It started for my family at 12:45 that day. We were at the Texas Tourist Bureau waiting for the Texas runners to appear over the hill. As they came over the hill it was so exciting for this was a very special day for us because my brother Tim who lives in Ardmore Oklahoma and a marathon runner was asked to take the flag from the Texas runners and take it over the border in to OK. I was so proud! Our parents were there along with my husband and Tim's wife and daughter. You see Tim's daughter lives in NYC not to far from the Word Trade Center and when she found out that her dad was running with the flag she flew in to surprise him. I can not tell you how proud I was to be an American that day. To see my brother and the rest of the runners take that flag an start running was beyond wonderful. After a brief ceremony which included my mom holding the flag as we sung God Bless America we watched my brother take the flag and run to the border passing the flag to the other runners. We hurried to get in our cars so we could be over the border before the runners so that we could see Tim take the flag over the border. As they came over the bridge a warm wonderful feeling came over me. He was one of the proud Americans holding the flag proudly. As they approached us my sweet dad said lets run with them. So we took our place on each side of my brother. He handed the flag to my dad and he was so proud . My dad is a World War II Vet and my husband is a Vietnam Vet. My daddy ran proud with the biggest smile on his face. After running for a few minutes he passed the flag back to my brother who in turn passed it to me. What a thrill to run with that flag and to do it with my brother and dad. Thanks for the opportunity to honor our proud fallen Americans. God Bless America and United We Shall Stand Forever!

Sincerely,

Judy VanDermeer
