My job requires stern warnings and "warm" tickets. I change flat tires, give directions and testify in court. I explain traffic and criminal laws to citizens. I give DARE stickers and HUGS to children. I am an Alabama State Trooper. Often I am required to wrestle DUI offenders to the ground and ultimately into the back seat of my patrol car. Likewise, I investigate traffic crashes and inform loved ones of the loss of a family member. Mine is a noble profession and I feel this is where God wants me.
I must admit that I was "bummed out" when informed of my assignment for the "Flag Run." I was excited about the possibility of patrolling Interstate 20....I felt I could make a significant difference there; placing DUI offenders in jail and otherwise keeping the roadway environment safe for Talladega Superspeedway travelers. Instead, I was assigned to the "Flag Run." How, I thought, could this run supplant the necessity for Troopers on I-20?
I am here to tell each of you that this assignment far exceeded my expectations. I can't think of anyplace I would have rather been..if that is proper English. I will NEVER forget the part I was ALLOWED to play in the "Flag Run."
Cheers here....flags waving there...whistles throughout....youngsters running in a church parking lot, pacing the flag....horns honking, people shouting. You absolutely had to be there.
I will forever remember this event. I am happy that us Alabama State Troopers had a chance to be involved in this. I am PROUD to be an AMERICAN. I believe in the Sovereign God...and I believe He is watching, waiting and excited for us as a Nation.
Sincerely,
Daniel Dean (#834)
