November 7th, 2001
After running a segment through New Mexico, my brother Captian Coleman (American 767) called me to share his experience running the flag. He then gave me the route through Arizona. When my 10 hour shift was over on the 7th, I loaded my bicycle onto my van and took off to meet the group. I parked at Route 79 and rode 13 miles at sunset east on route 60 to Supreme. When I arrived at the outskirts of town, I could feel the air charged with electric pride like I had never known before. I came upon Fire trucks, Highway Patrol, and the Motorhome with about 50 people ready to run. I was able to run about 5 miles before word came back that my bike had to come out of the Motorhome, no room to store it and the tired runners, so I suited up for the bike ride again and was pleased that one of the runners, a retired sheriff officer was getting very tired and offered to ride the bike so I could run the remaining 13 mile segment.
The feeling of holding the flag cannot be described in words, and the energy and strength I felt when I carried the memorial stick was that of every crew member on those Ill - fated flights of 9-11. This was the most heart felt run, and most meaningfull run I have ever participated in. I still get the chills in my spine when I think of that night. God Bless each and every runner and volenteer who participated in this run. I thank God for letting me share in this emotional, heart felt run. I will always remember.
