My husband MSgt Nick Aguilera USAF and our 13 year old son Nicholas ran two legs of the run in California. Yucca Valley and Rancho Cucamonga. I didn't participate as a runner, but my younger children and I did go to support everyone and to watch the final ceremony.
I can't tell you what I felt in my heart as I saw the people lined up along the streets with flags, banners, balloons, signs and anything they could find to show their patriotism and support for our country. We met so many wonderful people from all over the United States and even from the United Kingdom. We met children, other military members, businessmen and women, homemakers, airline employees, policemen, friends & family of some of the victims....it was just amazing. Everyone was so nice. It felt like we were all one big family.
We brought a tape with patriotic songs on it and chills ran through me as I saw people singing and waving their flags to the music. Cars were honking their horns. People were hanging out of their windows shouting, "God Bless America" and "Go USA". It is something that I am glad we got to witness in person. Something I want my children to remember for the rest of their lives.
I am saddened that it took such a horrific event for our country to pull together and show our unity, but if nothing else, the people that gave their lives on September 11th did not die in vain. Their families can take comfort in knowing that their loved ones have brought us all together.....as the name of the run appropriately states...Americans United!
God Bless all of the Flight Crews, passengers, victims, heroes, and their families......and God Bless America!
