Diary Entry...
Jackson's WJTV carried a story on the noonday news that caught my attention...it described how American and United Airlines were running a flag across the US to see to it that the American spirit of those traveling to Los Angeles on 9/11 reached a final destination. Like so many, I felt so helpless following the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Realizing how fortunate I was not to have suffered as much as those directly involved left a feeling of guilt. Here was the opportunity I had been waiting for...a chance to show the victims I cared; the airlines I trusted them; America, I believed in her; and the enemy, a spirit of unity.
Being a novice runner, I had never run more than 20 minutes. I found the strength that day to run over 50 minutes and if time had permitted, I could have gone longer! I joined the group in Pearl that ran to the Capitol. Words cannot describe the feeling of running behind Old Glory waving in the wind as the sun rose; nor can any word in Webster's define what it felt like to actually carry that flag and lead the pack with passers-by honking horns and people lining the streets in support of our efforts.
I met several people...inspired by the age of some, the eagerness of many, and humbled by the presence of those in the Army and National Guard.
My husband, Brent, is not one to do much running; nor, is he a morning person (we had to wake up before 5 A.M. to join the run. BUT, he accompanied me on this historic morning. It was very meaningful to me to have him by my side. What a wonderful experience for a couple to share! And, what a message to send to our son, Blake, who as a toddler represents the future of America. We are united as a family and so proud to be a part of this great "nation under God." May He bless our country!
