I found out about the "FLAGRUN" on a quick news spot, memorized the e-mail address and went right to my computer. The web site was just coordinated and so well in such a short period of time! When I e-mail Tony Devito I was not sure if he only wanted people in the flight industry, long distance runner etc.. I knew they were really trying hard to make this happen and I wanted to be apart of it, even if it was only a small part.
Tony wrote me back the next day I was in awe he said I could be apart of this Fantastic group of people I was soon to meet!! My husband and I were there about 12:30pm. and coordinator said that they would be about 3 hours late, we didn't care we were there to unite with Americans.
As the time got closer I was very nervous, anxious also wondering how large the flag was and how I would carry it being only 52' only hoping I would do a little part. I am a sprinter that had fusion surgery on my back so I didn't want to let anyone down, so I gave it my best shot. Everyone was so understanding.
The team from Newark was coming closer I was the first one to run!! WOW!! What a rush of energy police cars, people honking, cheering, waving "Old Glories" of there own. Everyone supported everyone.
When I started I was trying hard to hold the flag as high as I could as I ran I thought of my grandfather in WW2 my father on nuclear subs, and ALL the HERO that give us our FREEDOM including the Police, Fireman, EMT's, & those who gave there lives for us at the Towers and through the years. How Great it is to be and American!! I ran about a mile or so and came upon the next person to run as he saw me wearing down, he was a former Navy pilot he saluted the flag I saluted back and he took over the run, what a nice man.
I live in eye distance from the towers and was in them just the Tuesday before for the first time when I invited my brother Jason up here to see NYC. I am glad he had a chance to see & be in them and see NYC.
On the 11th I felt disbelief, mad and then helpless. THANK YOU for the HONOR of being apart of "FLAGRUN" it inspired me to help my community even more, and in a week we were able to raise $15,000 for two families they were sisters + 3 children each that lost there husbands on the 11th.
Congratulations Flagrun You United / America
