As the rest of the nation was riveted to the news reports on 09/11/01, we were also. We cannot put into words the horror we felt as events unfolded before our eyes. And we too have been frustrated by a feeling of helplessness, not knowing how to help all the victims and their families. We have flown our flag, but that seemed like such a small thing. Until now, we had not known how to connect.
As we came home from Albuquerque, in the distance from I-25, we could see all the police cars with lights flashing in the night, and then in their headlights there were the runnners. We waited until the next day 11/04/01, and positioned ourselves along the interstate off-ramp, with our flag to cheer these strong, dedicated people on as they entered Socorro, NM.
We then proceeded to the town Plaza where we sang the National Anthem and God Bless America with the others who came to share the moment. While the runners took this time to eat and get their 2 hours of rest time, we were proud to be able to walk the flag around the plaza, sometimes we carried, sometimes others carried, but we were proud to walk with it all the way. As parents of a young child, we were thrilled to be able to participate and we know that this is something that he will remember for the rest of his life. We could see the pride on his face as he carried the United States flag, and again as he carried our state flag. We were all proud to be the ones to hand both flags back to the runners as it came time for them to continue on their journey.
Thank you all for allowing us to be a part of this experience. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Mike, Susan and Michael Ivan DeHart.
