On a Saturday night, in the middle of the desert, who would be out on the state road at 10:00 p.m. till 2:00 a.m. for us? This was just one of the thoughts that ran through my mind when I left the crowd at Isleta Casino (outside of Albuquerque, NM) and began the 24 mile stint into Belen. What a surreal experience....running along a winding, rural road comfortably lit by an almost full moon and the head lamps of countless police, sheriff and fire vehicles.....What a thrill to come into tiny, Tome, New Mexico, be treated to hot chocolate by the volunteer firemen, surrounded by families waving Old Glory at 1:00 a.m....What a thrill to be accompanied out of town by a posse on horseback all volunteering to help carry our New Mexico flag. For over 15 miles we heard the Paul Revere-like clickity clop of horses hooves behind us. Rural America clearly understands the pain of urban New York and D.C. and joins in an almost holy memorial...What a privilege to have been part of this....
