New Mexico Coordinator's Update #2
Information update no. 2 October 15, 2001.

  1. General Information for New Mexico

If you wish to be a part of the New Mexico effort, please go to the official Flag Run web site, www.flagrun2001.org and register using the instructions provided. This will give us a record of your interest and make our coordination efforts easier.

I will publish the state wide master schedule later thisweek.

  2. Flag Run route through New Mexico.

The route outside of Albuquerque remains the same as reported in Update no. 1. We are coordinating with Clovis to provide an opportunity for people to participate in the run at a slow pace as the flag passes through the city. We are also in the process of coordinating the run through Albuquerque to include an extended period of time for slow runners to run along with the flag and be a part of the event. Near Socorro we are working with the local authorities to keep our distance on I-25 to a minimum. We also plan to have an event in Socorro for people to participate in.

  3. Runners Information.

The runner coordinator is Laurie Cummings(Lcumm80@aol.com). She is organizing the running teams and will contact all runners. If you wish to run together with another person, please let Laurie know.

The schedule that we are preparing assumes a running pace of 5 to 5.5 miles per hour. This equates to about 12 minute miles. We are planning on having certain sections of the route run at a slower pace (throughtowns), while other wide open sections may be run faster by the more elite runners. We will keep the average progress at about 5.5 miles per hour.

IF YOU WISH TO RUN DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR PACE. WE WILL ACCOMODATE ALL RUNNERS AT THE PACE THEY WISH TO RUN. It is important that you let Laurie know you intended pace forher planning purposes.

  4. Other Volunteer Information.

I need assistance with the following:

  • Vehicle support, long range communications (ham radio, etc),energy bars for runners, drivers

  • If you have contacts in the small cities that we will pass through, please let me know.

  • If you wish to participate, but not run, please contact DeeFriesen (friesend@aol.com) or Dusty Steedman (dmirly@dellpro.com). We are still in great need of transportation assistance.

This page will be updated ever several days in the next week, as we get closer to November 1, I will provide daily updates. Any serious questions you may call me at NM (505) 555-5555, TX (817) 555-5555.
