Information Update No. 5 October 25
- A BIG BIG thank you to all of you who attended the Tuesday night
planning session. We had terrific attendance and made some good progress
on implementing our plan. A special thank you to the following two groups:
If I got the names wrong or forgot some other group, please correct me and
I will make needed changes to this section on the next update.
- The above two groups are going to provide border-to-border
communications capability for the run. This is a tremendous challenge and
these guys are up for it. What a great bunch of professionals!
- Excitement about this event has reached the west coast. Disney is
interested in having the families of the aircrews and others visit
Disneyland as a special event. If this plan is finalized, the flag will
need to arrive 11 hours earlier in LA than originally scheduled: It may
mean that we will have to get to the Arizona border earlier. The only
portion of the schedule that might change is the portion beyond Pie Town.
I am discussing this with the National Coordinators and will have an answer
in about 24 hours.
- We are getting requests for groups to run together with the flag. If
you know of such a group or wish to be a part of such a group, please let
Laurie Cummings, the running coordinator, know. She is doing a terrific
job of organizing runners. Please direct all running related questions to
her at Lcumm80@aol.com.
- We still need vehicles, drivers and people who would be willing to
assist with other coordination efforts. Greg Sullivan is coordinating the
drivers and vehicles and is preparing an on-line registration form for you
to use. You will receive this in a couple of days. The Ford dealer in
Clovis who is loaning us the three vans requires that the drivers be at
least 25 years old. We need additional vehicles for other support
functions, so please contact Greg at GNTDSD@HOME.COM if you can help.
- If you live in or are familiar with any of the small towns along the
route, we would like to talk to you about finding support for fuel and
food. Call Ruth at 555-5555. The towns that we have been in contact with
are very excited about the Flag Run and eagerly look forward to it reaching
their town.
- We will be spending about 8 hours in a holding pattern at the Very
Large Array Telescope (VLA) Sunday night November 4. This will allow us to
have daylight to cross over the continental divide between Datil and Pie
Town. I have spoken with the wonderful people at the VLA and they are
allowing the convoy personnel to spend the night in the visiting scientist
quarters. Because the flag has been in constant motion since leaving
Boston, we will need to perform a VLA Night Owl Flag Run on the VLA
property. I am working with Dave Finley, VLA Public Information Officer,
to plan this event. This will be a very unique event. Picture the flag
moving past the giant radio antennas seen in the movie Contact.
- I will put another page on the web site that describes the operations
for the run.
Thank you all for making this event possible in New Mexico.
