I was excited when I heard about the Americans United Flag Run! It was an opportunity to participate in something to show my support for the lost members of the police and fire personnel, while not forgetting the airlines personnel and the many many civilians tragically lost in this incident.
Being a city of Philadelphia fireman in a high rise local, I was speechless when I saw the first tower fall, knowing what it meant. The extent of this tragity was unimaginable prior to this day. I have a duel role as a member of the PA Army Guard and am ready to respond to the call should I be needed.
I was inspired during the run by these thoughts, that even though we were turned away from helping NY (as they had more than enough volunteers), I knew the firemen and special rescue personnel would not give up, so neither would I. I ran further than I ever have in my life in a cooperative effort, passing the flag amoungst the runners as we went. Originally most of us planned to run from Cottman Ave. to Broad St., but the group insisted on going on until dawn, passing our flag to a team at Granite Run mall to finish the last PA leg.
To Gary, Donna, Bill and Gene of AA - Thanks for the oppotunity and support during the run! To Frank Y., Joe B. & son, Thanks for coming out!
I'll look back on this run with fond memories and with inspiration to run on longer runs in the future. I also wish the best to the survivors....we will never forget your loss! I will remember them during my prayers and as I attend the many services for my brother firemen! God Bless!
