Hello Flag Run organizers,
I'd like to thank you for one of the best days of my life.
I arrived in Terrell Texas early Saturday morning, and was treated like VIP by the wonderful Chamber of Commerce staff. I was asked to sign a frame for a future photo, and was whisked away to a few miles west of Wills Point, Texas. I was with a handful of folks - AA pilots, Kaufman High School Cross Country teamers, and regular pedestrians like myself.
Within minutes of running, I was handed THE FLAG. I felt such honor and awe for being a part of this patriotic, commemorative, continuity-of-care fellowship of and for Americans who were killed 9-11-01.
There was a runner who was holding a large pole with long black satin ribbons, with silver writing on the ribbons. I learned that these ribbons had the names of all United and American personnel who perished 9-11-01. As we pulled into Elmo Texas, the fire department started to wail their sirens to welcome us, just as a freight train pulled by and blew long horn bursts. Cars were honking, people were waving - the support was fantastic the entire journey. It was so majestic, it was almost surreal.
My single favorite moment was when we saw three cowboys race across a pasture on their horses to draw near. As they did, they somberly placed their hats over their hearts -- they had such regard for The Flag! They had tears in their eyes. And I was very moved.
We picked up more runners on into Terrell, and arrived via lots of cheers, drill teams, bands, war veterans in an all-American style gazebo to further honor the flag, our country, and the fallen.
While portions of this run were jubilant, it was also somber at times. The wonderful (telegenic !) coordinators also led us in the pledge of allegiance several times, and reflections on Americans who were now gone.
Thank you for a day I will NEVER ever forget....If I could only fly to the panhandle tonight, I would...
Sincerely,
Lisa Danna
