The proclamation below was prepared by Mayor Trent Sisemore and the City of Amarillo to commemorate October 31, 2001 as FLAG ACROSS AMERICA DAY, noting that the run passed through the city on old Route 66 and stopped briefly on its way to Los Angeles.
Mayor Sisemore read the proclamation aloud at John Stiff Memorial Park, which served as Camp Amarillo, the third base camp in the Texas Panhandle, before an audience of several hundred runners and supporters and a large media contingent, when the flag arrived at approximately 10:45 pm. The flag resided at Camp Amarillo for approximately one hour, and then departed westbound on U.S. Route 60 just prior to midnight for Dawn, Hereford, Farwell and the New Mexico border.
