SC Flag Run Coordinator's Update 10/11/01

Hi everyone,

Well, it has been a great day. The flag got off to its start in Boston at noon and continues to make its way. The response has been fantastic.

I have a few notes for today, some of which are repeated from yesterday.

  1. The flag will arrive in South Carolina at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18th. The route will be along Hwy 1 all the way from the North Carolina Border to Georgia. We will deliver the flag to Georgia at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19th.

  2. I have divided the route into four sections:

    1. From the NC border to the Richland County line (near Camden) - 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    2. From the Richland Co. line to Lexington - 6 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
    3. From Lexington to Aiken - 1:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
    4. From Aiken to the Georgia border - 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This is a slight change in the break points. These times are estimates. The actual time might vary a little as the time draws near. The start and end times for the state are fixed. This will give you a good idea as to where to put your request.

  3. Please log on to the www.flagrun2001.org web site. This is the best way for us to track the people who want to run and not have anyone slip through. Please try to be specific about where you want to run. The times are listed above.

  4. At some point I am going to have to sort out the runners for each section. The runners who have signed up at that time will be "primary runners". I need to do this for planning purposes. Anyone who wants to run but may not have heard in time will be allowed to run. In fact, the more runners, the better. I just won't be able to logistically plan for late addition runners.

  5. Here in Columbia we are planning to arrive at the Capitol just after 11:00 p.m. Hopefully it will be carried live on the evening news. We will have a couple of police, EMS, and fire trucks in a parade along the route. The streets will be blocked off for the run. The local support has been fantastic.

  6. I am still working on transportation. It should come, I just don't have it yet.
Again, thanks for you help and support. This event is really coming together. Tell your friends, sign up on the www.flagrun2001.org web site, and have a great evening.
