DC Update #2 1102 EST Oct 12, 2001 DC Volunteers: Please check the web site daily for specific instructions for DC. You will see details on timelines thru town. There has been significant media attention on this event, CNN, CBS Evening News, etc. Potential exists for Political interest as the Flag passes through town. I am sending this note out to you to let you know that you have not been forgotten and to remind you that future updates on progress of the team - departed Boston yesterday - and specific instructions for DC runners will be available on the web site www.flagrun2001.org. Within that site on the Home page is a DC box. When you click that box you will get some specific instructions and information on how you can participate. For the most part... we will run totally down US Route 1. There will be a Recreation Vehicle (maybe 2) with Cruise America Logos on it traveling slowly down Route 1. Please consider traveling with another runner and taking two cars so that one car can be staged at the start point and the other car at your departure point that is convenient for you. Also, use the Metro!! You can join the MD group as they are south on the RT 1 from the College Park Metro and jump off later, or join us at the RI Metro stop and get off at the Smithsonian stop on the Mall. We have flexibility here in DC so lets use it. Please note that as of our current schedule, we will be crossing from MD into DC at 0600 and hit the Capitol at 0715. We are limited in the number of folks that can actually run on Capitol grounds and thru the Mall. (25 per group) We may have to break you up in two or more groups once near the Capitol to keep things manageable. The DC police will provide an escort once we hit the MD DC border. I talked to Mike Burr last night as he was crossing into RI from MA. The group is on time and moving out with significant support along the way. The web site will be updated to reflect actual progress so that you can follow us into your jump in point. Everyone should get the chance to carry the flag even if it is just for 50 yards. We will have to be considerate of each other in this regard. Final Note: Please wear shirts, hats or other items of clothing that are patriotic. Some of you may have T shirts with American flags on them. Use your imagination. If you have very small hand held flags you can bring them, but please do not bring a large or normal sized flag. We do not want to confuse the public or Media about which flag is actually being run across the country. I truly appreciate your support. This is a complete grass roots effort done totally by volunteers such as yourselves. You should be proud of what you are going to do. I know that Mike Burr, Frank LaCorte and those of us on the National Team are proud of all of you. many thanks, Tom D'Agostino |
