North Carolina Coordinator's Letter
Message for NC Volunteers and Runners

My name is Alan Pollenz, and I am one of two Flagrun coordinators for North Carolina. The other coordinator is Todd Wissing. Todd's duties are primarily media relations, while I am responsible for everything directly relating to the run itself. As such, I will be your primary contact.

I would like to thank each of you for volunteering your time and energy to make Flagrun happen. Without the runners and associated support personnel, this would be a non-event.

The North Carolina route for the Flagrun is US Route 1 from the Virginia border to the South Carolina border. The anticipated time for flag entry into North Carolina is October 16 at 10:30 pm. The anticipated handoff to South Carolina is October 18 at 8:00 am.

In addition to individual runners like yourselves, we will be contacting military installations, fire and law enforcement agencies, running clubs, and high school track and cross country teams to participate. We will be looking for volunteers as well as runners.

I encourage each of you to contact folks to your to help us in our effort. No offer for assistance with this project will be refused. Also, any suggestions that you may have as to how to make this run smoothly are welcome.

Feel free to contact me in the coming days from 9 am to 9 pm.

I have developed an initial time line from The VA/NC border through Cary. The file is attached to this email has been scanned for viruses. The file is also available online on the official North Carolina Event Page here:

I will also update the timeline page here:

I will complete the rest of the state by Thursday evening.

The pace that I used is 11 minutes per mile. I have also built in a 30 minute break at the state capital. I feel this will be sufficient for media purposes. Currently, my projection is that we will finish 57 minutes ahead of schedule. This assumes that my mileage estimates, both for the northern half that I have driven already and the southern half I will drive tomorrow, are accurate.

Some of the segments I have listed are rather long. However, these will be divided up among several runners. There are many small parking lots/gathering areas along the way that I have not listed. I expect most runners will run in the 3-5 mile range, although some will run further and some will run less, at their request. Those of you that have said that you can only run an 11 or 12 minute pace, that's ok. There are many that will run faster, so it will balance out.

I would like everyone to look at the schedule and think about your top 3 choices for segments you would like to run. I may not be able to accommodate your first request, as we are coordinating with several larger groups . Also, keep in mind that we may not be able to immediately shuttle you back to your vehicle upon completion of your segment. You may need to ride in the RV for a little bit until we can get you back. I know no one wants to run at 3 am, but I will need some diehards to cover the 2 overnight periods. We will pay time and a half for these shifts.

A few folks have asked about bikes/rollerblades, etc. It is a requirement that this be completed on foot. However, we certainly encourage you, and, for that matter, everyone's friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to come out and bike, skate, jog, etc. along with the "official" participants.

For the non-runner support volunteers, please let me know what your schedule looks like and how much time you can give to the run.

Please pass this message along to as many people as you possibly can. More information is available at http://www.flagrun2001.org

Thanks.
